- First name: Stephen   - Last name: Jones   - Email address:   - Phone number(s):   - Postal code: 98122   - City: Seattle   - State or province: WA   - Country: USA   - Organization(s) you work for or study at (please supply the name and city for each organization): SDF Public Access UNIX System, INC 501(c)(7) Dallas, TX   - Fields of interest (e.g. computer linguistics, numerical analysis, business software, medicine, bioinformatics): Music, relays, discrete components, computer generated music   - Have you written any Lisp-related papers? If so, please supply bibliographical references (and URL's, if possible). None   - Have you developed or participated in the development of any Lisp-related programs or libraries? If so, please supply a URL, if possible. Yes   - Lisp variants you have used (e.g. Common Lisp, Scheme, Dylan): ZetaLISP/Common LISP, MACLISP   - Lisp variants you're currently using or intend to use in the near future: ZetaLISP/Common LISP, MACLISP   - Lisp implementations you have used (e.g. CMUCL, Lispworks, Allegro Common Lisp): TOPS-20 MACLISP, INTERLISP-10, Symbolics GENERA   - Lisp implementations you're currently using or intend to use in the near future: TOPS-20 MACLISP, INTERLISP-10, Symbolics GENERA   - Computer platforms on which you're using or deploying Lisp: KLH KL10B, Symbolics XL1200, Dec ALPHA 264DP   - Number of years of experience with Lisp: 12 years   - Experience with other programming languages (please supply the number of years and the name of the language): IBM BASIC, C, ksh, sed, awk, python .. probably non-interesting.   - Total number of years of programming experience: 24 years   - Do you use Lisp: - at work (if so, how much) Yes, less than 5% .. more if I can.   - for study (if so, how much) 0% - as a hobby (if so, how much) 0%   - Are you using Lisp as much as you would like to? If not, why not? My primary platform is NetBSD ALPHA which unfortunately does not have a usable LISP system .. That being said, I do have access to OPENLISP, but lack of documentation is preventing me from using it.   - Do you see any obstacles to further Lisp growth (if so, what is the biggest obstacle in your opinion)? Education. Corporations dump lots of money into schools brainwashing young people into believing that problems should be approached a certain way. There are so many people pouring out of schools (and have been) with very limited programming skills focused almost entirely on visual C++, Java and Visual Basic. Pay for programmers will continue to be devalued as outsourcing increases where concepts for products are basically farmed out to a group of 10, 20 or 30 'code harvesters' who use languages like C++, Java and Visual Basic because when they went to school they were told that is what they had to learn if they wanted a job on the farm paying 50 cents an hour.   - Would you be interested in a Lisp-related job or contract work? Yes   - Is your organization interested in hiring Lisp programmers? As contract work, yes. We have several projects that might be attractive to LISP programmers who want to educate young people. Projects would range from UNIX shell level utilities and games, to web applications. We're looking for LISP programmers with creativity and the desire to write multiuser interactive utilities and games. See ascii-games.org for a rough idea.   - Are you currently participating in Lisp-related meetings? ALU, local SEALUG (Seattle Lisp User's Group)   If so, where and how often? SEALUG meets at least once a quarter, usually for DIM SUM   If not, would you be interested in such meetings?
